Surprise View

Surprise View is a viewpoint on the narrow road up to Watendlath, set on a wooded cliff edge high above Derwentwater. Step out from the trees and the whole lake opens up below you, with the Newlands fells beyond and, on a clear day, Bassenthwaite Lake in the distance.

The road climbs past Ashness Bridge, where there is parking, and is single track in places, so take it slowly. For a car free trip, catch the Keswick Launch to Ashness Gate and walk up the lane. Keep children and dogs close at the edge, as the drop is steep.
