Skiddaw

2.5 miles from Low Briery · nearest town Keswick

At 931 metres, Skiddaw is the big fell you can see rising behind Keswick, and one of the few in England above 3,000 feet. The most popular way up is the broad Jenkin Hill path. Starting from the Gale Road car park cuts out the lower slopes, leaving roughly 5 km and 650 metres of climbing to the top.

The path is clear and not technical, but it is long and steady, so expect a full half day. The summit ridge is open and exposed, and the weather up there can be far colder and windier than in town. Take waterproofs, warm layers, a map and compass, and turn back if cloud comes down.
