Sightseeing
Grasmere and neighbouring Rydal are where William Wordsworth spent much of his life. You can visit Dove Cottage, his home from 1799 to 1808, and Rydal Mount, where he lived for 37 years. He is buried in St Oswald’s churchyard in Grasmere, and nearby Dora’s Field is planted with daffodils in memory of his daughter.
Beyond the poetry, there are gentle walks around Grasmere and Rydal Water, including the old quarry cave above Rydal Water. Do not leave without trying Grasmere Gingerbread. The drive from Keswick follows the A591 past Thirlmere and over Dunmail Raise.
