The Coledale Round

3.8 miles from Low Briery · nearest town Braithwaite

The Coledale Round, often called the Coledale Horseshoe, is a classic high level walk circling the valley of Coledale Beck from the village of Braithwaite. It usually takes in Grisedale Pike at 791 metres and Crag Hill, the highest point at 839 metres, along with neighbouring tops such as Hopegill Head and Sail.

Depending on the version you choose, expect roughly 8 to 11 miles and well over 1,000 metres of climbing, so this is a full day for fit, experienced walkers. Much of the route is on open ridges with few easy ways down. Set off early, carry food, waterproofs, a map and compass, and check the mountain forecast.
